Orange Post Top-10 Finish at NCAAs

11/18/2023 11:58:00 AM | Cross Country

The Syracuse men's cross country team posted its first top-10 finish since 2016, taking ninth overall at the NCAA Championships in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Led by All-America performances from Perry Mackinnon and Sam Lawler, 'Cuse finished with 299 team points, doing so without one of their top runners as Paul O'Donnell had to pull out of the race after 3,000-meters.

Mackinnon finished 19th – the highest Orange finisher at the meet since Justyn Knight's NCAA Championship in 2017 – traversing the 10k course in 29:30.8. Lawler was 34th in 29:42.5.

Behind the two All-Americans, Assaf Harari took 73rd in 30:27.2, Alex Comerford was 107th in 30:36.4 and Nathan Lawler rounded out the scoring in 110th (30:37.5). Silas Derfel finished in 32:48.1 as 'Cuse's sixth runner.

Oklahoma State won the team championship with an impressive 49 points. The Orange were the second-highest finishing team from the ACC, behind North Carolina (249 points) and were the top finishing team from the NCAA's Northeast Region.

The Syracuse women finished 27th at the race, in what was their third-straight NCAA Championship appearance.

Savannah Roark (20:35.3) was 'Cuse's top finisher in 87th place. Rylie Lusk (20:54.6) and Sophia Jacobs-Townsley (20:54.7) came in back-to-back in 105th and 106th. Olivia Joly (21:19.6) was 184th and Madison Neuner (21:27.78) placed 194th to round out the five scorers. Emma Eastman (21:38.7) and Baneet Baines (22:01.0) also raced for the Orange.

The ACC was once again a top-performing conference at the meet, as NC State successfully defended their title (123 points), followed by Notre Dame who took fourth, Virginia (15th), Boston College (26th) and Syracuse
