Mintz’s Career Best 33 Helps Orange Defeat LSU, 80-57

Judah Mintz totaled a career-best 33 points and lead Syracuse (5-2) to win its ACC/SEC challenge matchup against LSU (4-3), 80-57, in the JMA Wireless Dome on Tuesday night.
Mintz became the first Orange performer to reach 33 points in a regulation game since Tyus Battle tallied 34 in a bout versus Wake Forest on Feb. 2, 2018.
Mintz went 13-of-15 from the foul line, the most makes and attempts from the charity stripe in his career. The Orange squad made 19-of-23 from the foul line, including 14-of-15 in the first half and 10-of-11 of those from Mintz.
THE ACC/SEC CHALLENGE
Tuesday was the first night of the two-day ACC/SEC Challenge. There are 14 matchups overall with seven played each evening. This is the first year of the event.
WHEN THE GAME WAS DECIDED
With Syracuse ahead 33-28 after the intermission, Mintz scored eight points in the opening 1:23 of the second half -- he had a conventional layup, followed by a layup that resulted in a three-point play, and a 3-point jumper off a LSU turnover to help Syracuse earn its first double-digit lead of the contest, 41-28. The Orange extended the advantage to as many as 26 points. A 13-point Syracuse run began at the 13:13 mark, powered by back-to-back 3-point makes from Chris Bell, a slam and layup from Maliq Brown and a corner three from Justin Taylor, making the difference 63-40.
STALEMATE TO START
There were three lead changes and four ties in the first 20 minutes of play. The Orange managed to build a six-point margin with 1:54 to go in the half after two made free throws from Mintz and a slam from sophomore forward Maliq Brown. Syracuse closed out the first period with a slam dunk from Mintz off a fast break and went into the intermission with a five-point lead, 33-28. Mintz produced 17 first-half points for the Orange.
HOT SECOND HALF
Mintz scored 10 of the first 12 points scored to begin the final period. Chris Bell collected 17 of his 20 points in the final 20 minutes. He tied his career-best showing with six 3-pointers in the contest. The Orange out-rebounded the Tigers, 23-10, in second half.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
Syracuse will take a trip to Charlottesville, Va., on December 2 for a tilt against conference opponent Virginia in the John Paul Jones Arena. Tipoff is set for noon and the game will be televised on ESPN2.
