Orange Lose To UConn In NCAA Second Round

An outstanding season for the Orange came to a close as the 6-seed Syracuse women's basketball team (24-8) was outlasted by former Big East rival and 3-seed UConn (31-5), 72-64, on Monday night in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.
 
Fifth-year Dyaisha Fair contributed a team-leading 20 points in the contest. She moved into third on the NCAA all-time career scoring list with 3,403 points over her collegiate career. Freshman Sophie Burrows scored a career-high 18 points, thanks to a personal-best six 3-pointers. Junior Georgia Woolley produced 18 points, four rebounds and four assists.
 
UConn's Paige Bueckers scored a game-high 32 points. Ashlynn Shade produced 19 points, while Aaliyah Edwards and KK Arnold added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
 
How It Happened
Syracuse jumped out to an early 11-7 lead powered by eight points from Woolley. After the Huskies knotted the score at 11-11, neither team led by more than two points for the rest of the first quarter. With the game tied at 16-16, UConn scored 10 unanswered points from the end of the first period into the second that gave the Huskies a 26-16 advantage with 7:25 left in the second quarter. The Orange cut their deficit to six with 1:43 to go before halftime after Woolley converted a conventional three-point play and Wilson hit a jumper. UConn ended the first half with five consecutive points and took a 39-28 lead into the halftime intermission.
 
Trailing 41-30 in the third quarter, the Orange produced an 8-0 run that brought them within three, 41-38, with 5:00 to go in the period. Fair and Burrows each drained shots from beyond the arc and Woolley converted a jumper during the stretch. Syracuse was down by four with 1:50 left in the third quarter before Arnold hit a jumper and Shade made a 3-pointer to go ahead, 53-44, to end the period.
 
Syracuse was down, 65-55, with 3:16 to go in the affair. A 3-pointer from Fair and Burrows, and a bucket from Latham cut the Orange deficit to two, 65-63, with 1:57 to go. After Bueckers knocked down a basket, Fair made one of two from the foul line. With 29 seconds left, Arnold knocked down a trey that gave the Huskies a six-point lead and effectively sealed the game.

  • Fair finished the season scoring 20-or-more points in 22 of the team's 32 games.
  • Junior forward Kyra Wood grabbed 10 rebounds in the outing. She had double-digit boards in seven games this season.
