No. 3 Syracuse Takes on No. 1 Notre Dame Saturday
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After a shutdown week on defense with an impact on the offensive side as well, Syracuse University men's lacrosse sophomore Billy Dwan was named ACC Defensive Player of the Week. The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) announced its weekly awards Tuesday afternoon.
Dwan, a close defenseman hailing from Lutherville, Maryland, was tasked with marking one of the country's top scoring threats and reigning Tewaaraton Trophy winner Brennan O'Neill. Backed by a full-team defensive effort, Dwan and company held O'Neill in check to just one goal and one assist in a 10-4 win for then fifth-ranked Syracuse over then third-ranked Duke Wednesday. It was the fewest goals the Orange have allowed against an ACC opponent since joining the league and Duke's four goals was its smallest offensive production since the 2012 campaign.
Over the weekend at Hobart, Dwan added two goals against the Statesmen as Syracuse retained the Kraus-Simmons Trophy in the 109th meeting between programs. Dwan added three takeaways on the north shore of Seneca Lake, while adding to his four ground balls for the week. Dwan and the defense allowed just 11 goals across 120 minutes of action last week.
Dwan and the No. 3/3 Orange head for the midwest on Saturday, squaring off with No. 1/1 Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. Game time at Arlotta Stadium is slated for a 2 p.m. start on ACC Network. TK99/105 and WAER will have radio broadcasts as well.
