Ward, Tyrrell Lead No. 5 Orange to Fifth-Straight Win

SYRACUSE, NEW YORK – Emma Ward and Emma Tyrrell combined for 10 goals and 12 points to lead No. 5 Syracuse women's lacrosse to a 16-13 victory against No. 7 Loyola on Wednesday in the JMA Wireless Dome. With the win, which was the Orange's fourth against a top-10 opponent this season, 'Cuse improves to 8-3 on the year.
Tyrrell scored a season-high six goals, while Ward also finished with six points on four goals and two assists. In addition, Savannah Sweitzer recorded the second hat trick of her career.
HOW IT HAPPENED
A tight first half featured five ties before Payton Rowley's goal with 54 seconds on the clock sent the Orange to the locker room with an 8-7 lead. The Greyhounds (9-1) struck first in the second half to again even the score at 9-9, but that would be their only goal of the third quarter. Tyrrell scored back-to-back goals to spark Syracuse on a 5-0 scoring run to end the quarter. Tyrrell scored three of the five goals and her fifth goal of the day 26 seconds into the fourth quarter gave Syracuse its largest lead of the day at 14-8.
Loyola fought back, scoring three of the next four goals to cut the deficit to 15-11 with 7:06 remaining. The Orange pushed the lead back to five when Sweitzer found the back of the net off a pass from Ward with one second on the shot clock.
The Greyhounds again wouldn't go away, scoring back-to-back goals to get within three, 16-13, with 1:48 remaining. After Chase Boyle scored her sixth goal of the game, Loyola won the ensuing draw, but Bianca Chevarie caused a turnover and picked up the ground ball to secure the fifth-straight victory for the Orange.
OF NOTE
The Syracuse defense, which entered the game ranked 10th in the nation in caused turnovers per game, caused 10 Loyola miscues. Chevarie, Katie Goodale and Coco Vandiver had two each.
Kate Mashewske recorded three draw controls to increase her career total to 424. She ranks second on Syracuse's career leader list for draw controls, trailing Kailah Kempney (2012-15) by 15.
A crowd of 1,238 gathered at the JMA Dome to watch the contest. The Orange have drawn more than 1,000 fans to every home game this season and lead the nation in attendance.
