Rowing Climbs to #8 in National Rankings

The Orange are ranked eighth in this week's Pocock CRCA Coaches Poll, up four spots from last week after their performance at the ACC/Big 10/Ivy Duals. The ranking matches the highest in program history. Syracuse was ranked eighth in the in the second and third weeks of the 2023 season. The 2021 squad also reached eighth in the national polls.
Syracuse won six races at the ACC/BIG 10/Ivy Duals, which featured five nationally ranked teams, including Penn (6th last week), Indiana (13th), Rutgers (14th), Radcliffe (19th) Ohio State (11th). In the first session, Syracuse won three races, including the second varsity eight, varsity four and fourth varsity eight. The Orange also had three second place finishes, including the varsity eight, second varsity four and third varsity eight. In the second racing session Syracuse beat Ohio State in three races, including the varsity eight, second varsity eight and second varsity four.
The Orange varsity eight retained the Elizabeth H. O'Leary Cup with a victory against Radcliffe. The O'Leary Cup, named for Radcliffe coach Liz O'Leary, has been awarded to the winner of the varsity eight race between Syracuse, Dartmouth and Radcliffe since 2000. Syracuse has won the past five races against Radcliffe to keep the trophy in the Ten Eyck Boathouse. The varsity eight posted a time of 6:42.0, behind Penn (6:40.6) and ahead of Indiana (7:07.7) and Radcliffe (7:07.1). In the second session, Syracuse (6:57.7) beat Ohio State (7:07.1).
The second varsity eight swept its races en route to earning the ACC Crew of the Week honor. The 2V8 (6:57.3) beat Penn was second (7:01.6), followed by Radcliffe (7:03.5) and Indiana (7:08.3). Against Ohio State, the Orange finished the race in 7:07.5, four seconds ahead of the Buckeyes (7:11.9).
Syracuse's varsity four beat Penn, Indiana and Radcliffe and finished second to Ohio State, while the second varsity four beat Ohio State and finished second behind Radcliffe and ahead of Penn and Indiana. The third varsity eight finished second in both of its races, while the varsity four placed first in its opening race and third in its second race.
Syracuse will race #5 Yale and Cornell on Saturday, April 6 on Fish Creek in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
